St. Achatius was a captain in the Roman army. When Emperor Maximian declared Roman soldiers could not be Christians, he would not give up his faith and was cruelly tortured. He prayed that he might be worthy of a martyr’s death. He died in either the year 307 or 311 outside the walls of the city of Constantinople. Emperor Constantine built a church in his honor there.
St. Achatius is invoked in all kinds of affliction, especially in one’s last agony. He should be represented as a soldier but, even though he was not a Bishop, he is shown in our window dressed in the attire of a Bishop.
