Our Lifeline to God

From the Desk of Father David

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Holy Spirit is our lifeline to God.  Thus, the Spirit enables us to follow Christ closely and find the abundance of life.  The Spirit helps us to discern God’s will.  Discerning is difficult, because there are so many “voices” and conflicting values that are always trying to pull us in one way or another.  All forms of media, especially social media, can have a strong influence on how we think.  When we have to make a decision between good and evil, no discernment is need, we need to choose good.  Discernment is to help us choose the greater good.  Before Jesus began His public ministry, He had to make the choice of taking care of His widowed mother or start traveling and proclaiming the Kingdom of God.  Both of these are good actions.  He chose the greater good of beginning His ministry.

Discernment has many elements that build on each other.  Silence so we can better hear God’s voice, open and honest dialogue with people of faith, learning to listen with our whole being, time for prayer and open and honest conversation with God.  In the discerning process, we need to avoid listening to our fears, pride and our wants.  We should listen to our needs, because by fulfilling our needs we become healthy both physically and spiritually.

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of the faithful and enkindle in them the fire of your love.  Send forth your Spirit, and they shall be created.  And you will renew the face of the earth.  Let us pray.  O God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever rejoice in His consolation.  Through Christ our Lord.  Amen

Peace,

Fr. David
