Become a better listener … 28-Jan-2018

From the Desk of Father David

Dear Friends in Christ,

The Psalm response today was “If today you hear His voice, harden not your hearts.” It is presumed we are listening for God’s voice. Some skills that help us become better listeners are:

  1. Be Fully in the moment,
  2. Put yourself in their shoes,
  3. Pick up key points and let the speaker know you heard,
  4. Practice active listening by trying to focus not on your response but on the speaker,
  5. Develop curiosity, an open mind, and a desire for growth.

These five ways are taken from the website fastcompany.com. Whether listening to a homily, presentation, reading the Scriptures, praying or reflecting upon our day we can apply these skills so we can hear God’s voice. First by entering into the moment with an open heart, mind and soul. Second, by trying to see everything from Jesus’ point of view. The Church has a very long tradition of asking everyone at night to reflect upon their day, trying to see it from God’s point of view. Then thank God for all that went well and ask for forgiveness and guidance for what didn’t go well. Third, take time to reflect and prayerfully mull over key points. Fourth, don’t jump to conclusions or actions keep listening. Finally develop a sense of curiosity because God is the God of surprises and we can always learn and experience Jesus in new ways.

May Almighty God help us to hear His voice and respond with patience and courage. In a world with so much noise, may He help us to be good listeners thus enabling us to experience others through the sharing of our lives.

In joy and peace,

Fr. David
